### What size UPS do I need?

Add up the watts of every device the UPS must power, then add 20–30% headroom. For example, a small server rack drawing 600 W needs a UPS of at least about 1 kVA, with batteries sized for the backup time you want. Our backup time calculator gives an estimate.

### What is the difference between an online UPS and an inverter?

An online UPS powers equipment continuously from its batteries through a double conversion, so there is no switch-over gap. A typical home inverter switches over when mains fails, which can take several milliseconds and restart sensitive IT equipment.

### Are lithium batteries worth it?

For daily load-shedding, usually yes. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries last several times more cycles than lead-acid, recharge faster between outages and need no maintenance, so they often cost less over their lifetime.
